Women's Tailoring

Fashion Design

March 2025 - July 2025

This project focused on the design of women’s suits. I explored the world of tailoring, studying the history and evolution of women’s suits and how they developed in accordance to traditional men's tailoring.
My research also examined the suit’s key elements including collars, lapels, pockets, cuffs, and buttons — to better understand how each component contributes to the silhouette and identity of the garment.

As the core of the personal project, each student was asked to choose an influential female figure and design a suit inspired by her.
I chose the influential French writer and philosopher Simone de Beauvoir. Through my research, I discovered that she used to collect objects and souvenirs during her travels around the world, and had a deep love for cycling.

My design concept centered on the influence of the bicycle on women's fashion. The bicycle played a key role in the history of women’s liberation beginning in the late 19th century, offering both physical freedom and a challenge to restrictive dress codes that paralleled Simone's revolutionary ideas at the time.
I examined the structure of the bicycle in relation to the female body and the tailored suit, incorporating real bicycle parts, such as a saddle and a chain into the development process.
I also explored the visual language of bicycle detailing, using it as inspiration for custom embroidery and Argyle-print topstitching patterns I created by hand.
