The White Shirt

December 2023 - March 2024

For the first-semester project of my second-year, the task was examining the iconic white shirt, delving into its design elements and exploring its historical, cultural, and social context.

The starting point for designing my collection was a chosen work of art, and I drew inspiration from J.M.W. Turner's painting 'Snow Storm: Steam-Boat off a Harbour's Mouth' from 1842. In my design research, I focused on the emotional aspects of the storm that Turner masterfully depicted. The way he portrayed the storm as a whirlwind of lines and smudges to emphasize the emotional turmoil greatly influenced my design process.

I used machine zig-zag stitching to create flowing lines on the fabric, which intertwined to mirror the storm’s movement. The stitching was intentionally placed on the bias of the fabric, adding dynamic flow and enhancing the garment's sense of movement, much like the storm in the painting.
The final design was an oversized, tunic-style, asymmetric shirt that captures the essence of wind and chaos as seen in the painting.
